Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot: Which Should You Pay For?

Quick answer: Pick GitHub Copilot if you want an assistant inside your editor and on GitHub, with a free tier and a $10 a month Pro plan. Pick Claude Code if you want an agent that works across your whole codebase and runs commands, which starts at $17 a month billed annually ($20 monthly) on Pro and has no free tier.

How they are positioned

Claude Code's documentation describes an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and integrates with your development tools. Copilot's plans page emphasises chat, agent mode, code review, a cloud agent and a CLI, consuming monthly credits, with support across many editors and on GitHub itself.

There is overlap, because both now offer agent features. The difference you will feel day to day is where you work: Copilot is woven into your editor and your GitHub workflow, while Claude Code is a standalone tool you point at a repository.

Price in practice

For one developer the cheapest comparison is Copilot Pro at $10 a month against Claude Code on Pro at $17 a month (annual billing). Copilot also has a free plan, so you can try it before paying; Claude Code does not. At the high end both list a $100 a month tier, but they measure usage differently, so compare how much you would actually use rather than the headline price.

Who should choose which

  • You live in your editor and on GitHub pull requests: Copilot. Pull request reviews and assigning work to Copilot are paid-plan features.
  • You want to delegate multi-file tasks from the terminal: Claude Code.
  • You are on a tight budget or want to try first: Copilot Free.
  • You expect heavy daily agent use: price out Claude Max against Copilot Pro+ or Max using your own usage.

You do not have to choose permanently. Many developers use an editor assistant for everyday completions and an agent for larger changes, and monthly billing makes it cheap to test both.
